The CrossFit Open at Furnace Fitness: What It Is and Why It Matters.
The CrossFit Open is a global, three-week competition designed for all fitness levels—bringing progress, accountability, and the Furnace Fitness community together.

February 5, 2026

The CrossFit Open began in 2011 with a simple but bold idea: athletes around the world completing the same workouts in their own gyms and submitting scores online. What started as an experiment has grown into the largest participatory fitness event on the planet—and one of the best ways to measure real progress.
From first pull-ups and muscle-ups to heavier lifts and improved movement, the Open shows us something powerful: as a community, we are getting fitter together.
The Open is for everyone—new members, seasoned CrossFitters, competitors, and supporters alike. It means something different to each athlete, but for many it brings clarity to the “why” behind daily training. It creates accountability, motivation, and a chance to see how far your hard work has taken you.
Why the Open Matters
Yes, the workouts are challenging, but the real driver of the Open is the atmosphere. During these three weeks, affiliates around the world come alive with energy, encouragement, and shared effort. The Open reminds us that we’re part of something bigger than our individual workouts. Independent of fitness level, the Open brings people together in a way that simply doesn’t happen when training alone.
How the Open Works at CrossFit Furnace Fitness
Each week for three weeks, the Open workout is released on Thursday at 8pm on the CrossFit Games website and broadcast live on www.youtube.com/@CrossFitGamesTV, where you can watch athletes battle it out.
At CrossFit Furnace Fitness, the Open workouts will:
- Be programmed into Friday morning classes
- Run all evening during Friday Night Lights, with heats, judging, and a buzzing community atmosphere
Friday Night Lights is one of the highlights of the year—high energy, big effort, and even bigger support, ensuring to stay up to date on our socials and members feed to see what we have planned, including themes for each week. If you can’t make it Friday night don’t worry we will bring the hype in all of the morning classes.
Divisions & Workout Options
Athletes are placed into divisions based on age and gender:
- Individual: Ages 18–34
- Age Groups: Teens (14–17) and Masters (35+)
Within your division, you’ll choose the workout version that matches your fitness level:
- RX’d: Workouts as written
- Scaled: Modified movements and lighter loads
- Foundations: Ideal for newer athletes or first-time Open participants
- Adaptive: Inclusive options for athletes with permanent impairments, including scaled adaptive
No matter where you are in your fitness journey, there is a version of the Open for you.
“I’m Not Competing—Is the Open Still for Me?”
Absolutely. You don’t need to be an elite athlete or even consider yourself competitive to take part. Most athletes are simply competing with themselves.
The Open:
- Provides a clear check-in on your fitness
- Adds accountability and motivation
- Encourages consistency and goal-setting
- Creates memories, milestones, and shared experiences
The workouts programmed during the Open are no different than those we perform each day in class, practicing the movements of CrossFit, and working to move well each day means you’re well-equipped and ready to take on the Open! Sharing our scores is part of the CrossFit culture and why we write them on the whiteboard each day in class. It provides us with an additional layer of accountability and shared commitment to the Workout of the Day. And yeah — it helps make sure that cheating, rep shaving, and false score reporting are rooted out of our community.
Judging is part of the Open to reinforce standards and fairness. This is how CrossFit remains measurable, observable, and repeatable. While not required, we strongly recommend completing the 2026 Judges Course, which ensures a solid understanding of movement standards and scoring.
