Every Pro Was Once a Beginner

As we head into an exciting summer at Furnace Fitness, there's one message that feels particularly relevant as we prepare for our very first in-house Throwdown on 11th July:

Every RX athlete was once a beginner.

RX actually comes from the medical abbreviation "Rx" (prescription). In CrossFit, an RX athlete is someone who can complete workouts “as prescribed”, without scaling the movements, reps, weights, or standards. For many members, being able to tackle workouts RX represents years of hard work, consistency, and skill development.

But here's the important thing: nobody starts there.

Every RX athlete in our gym was once learning the basics. They scaled workouts, asked questions, struggled with new movements, and gradually built their fitness over time. The athletes who now seem confident and experienced didn't begin that way, they simply kept showing up.

For some of you, the thought of taking part in a Throwdown might feel exciting. For others, it might feel slightly terrifying. You may be wondering if you're fit enough, strong enough, experienced enough, or whether everyone else will be better than you.

The truth is that every athlete you admire, every member who seems confident in class, and every coach started exactly where you are now. Nobody begins as an expert. We all start with our first class, our first workout, our first lift, and our first attempt at something that feels outside our comfort zone.

Your Journey, Your Pace

One of the biggest mistakes we can make in fitness is comparing our beginning to someone else's middle.

At Furnace, we have members from all walks of life with different backgrounds, abilities, and experience levels. Some have been training for years, while others only recently walked through our doors for the first time.

The Throwdown isn't about comparing yourself to anyone else. It's about challenging yourself, having fun, and seeing how far you've come. Whether you're lifting your first barbell or chasing a new personal best, your journey is your own, and every step forward counts.

From Beginner to the CrossFit Games

A perfect example of this mindset can be found right here at Furnace.

This year, our coach Vicki has qualified for the CrossFit Games, the pinnacle of the sport and a stage that represents years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. What makes Vicki's achievement so inspiring isn't just where she is now; it's remembering that she once stood exactly where every beginner stands. She wasn't born able to perform complex gymnastics movements, lift heavy weights, or compete at an elite level. Like all athletes, she started with the basics, learned through mistakes, faced setbacks, and kept showing up.

Her journey is a reminder that progress isn't about being perfect from day one. It's about consistently taking the next step forward. While most of us aren't aiming for the CrossFit Games, the principle remains the same. Whether your goal is to complete your first workout, lose weight, build strength, improve your health, or take part in your first Throwdown, every achievement starts with the decision to begin.

Celebrate How Far You've Come

It's easy to focus on where we want to be and forget how much progress we've already made. Maybe you've become more consistent with your training. Maybe you've learned a new skill, increased your confidence, or discovered that you're capable of far more than you thought possible. These are all victories worth celebrating.

The Throwdown gives us a chance to recognise those achievements and put all the hard work you've been doing into action. It isn't reserved for the "best" athletes, it's an opportunity for every member to challenge themselves and be proud of what they've accomplished.

Lean on Your Community

One of the things that makes Furnace special is the community we've built together. If you're feeling nervous about the Throwdown, know that you're not alone. Chances are many other members are feeling exactly the same way.

Ask questions. Speak to the coaches. Chat with other members. The support available within the gym is one of our greatest strengths, and you'll quickly discover that everyone wants to see you succeed. The atmosphere on the day won't be about judgement, it's about encouragement, teamwork, and celebrating what our community can achieve together.

Growth Happens Outside Your Comfort Zone

Anything worthwhile usually comes with a little uncertainty. Whether it's joining your first class, attempting a new movement, or signing up for your first Throwdown, growth often begins when we decide to do something that feels challenging.

You don't need to be the strongest, fastest, or most experienced person in the room to take part. You simply need the willingness to show up and give it your best effort. That's where confidence is built.

See You on 11th July

Our first Furnace Fitness Throwdown is about much more than scores or leaderboards. It's about community, courage, and celebrating the progress we've all made together.

So if your feeling apprehensive about taking part and feeling unsure, remember this:

Every pro was once a beginner.

The only difference between those who succeed and those who don't is that they were willing to take that first step.

Ready to Start Your Own Journey?

If you're reading this and you're not currently a Furnace Fitness member, consider this your invitation. You don't need to get fit before joining. You don't need experience. You don't need to know all the movements or have everything figured out. You simply need to start.

Our coaching team will guide you every step of the way, our community will support you, and you'll quickly discover that fitness is about so much more than workouts, it's about becoming the best version of yourself.
