August at Furnace: Hero Month
August is Hero Month at Furnace Fitness.
By
July 15, 2026

For the entire month, our workouts will be inspired by CrossFit Hero WODs, workouts created to honour military personnel, first responders, law enforcement officers, and members of the CrossFit community who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others.
Since the early days of CrossFit, Hero Workouts have served as a way to remember these individuals through effort. They are often physically demanding, mentally challenging, and designed to ask a little more of us than a typical workout. The challenge is intentional. It reminds us that while a tough workout may push us outside our comfort zone, it pales in comparison to the sacrifice of those whose names are written at the top of the whiteboard.
Throughout August, we'll be sharing some of the stories behind the Hero Workouts programmed in class, helping us connect the workout to the individual it honours.
It's Not About RX
When people hear "Hero Workout," they often think of Murph and immediately worry about whether they'll be able to complete it.
The answer is simple: yes.
Not because you'll necessarily do it RX, but because Hero Workouts, like all CrossFit workouts, can be adapted for every athlete.
You don't need to finish RX.
You don't need to keep up with someone else's pace.
You don't need to complete every rep exactly as written.
What matters is showing up and taking part.
One of the things we talked about during Murph was that scaling isn't a lesser version of the workout. Scaling is what allows athletes of different ages, abilities, fitness levels, and experience to stand side by side and experience the same challenge together.
That's one of the things that makes CrossFit special.
Whether you're an experienced RX athlete, a regular class member, or someone who has only recently started their fitness journey, Hero Month is for you.
Expect to Run
If you've looked through Hero Workouts before, you'll know many of them feature running, and plenty of it.
As a result, running will be a significant focus throughout August.
For some, that may sound exciting. For others, perhaps less so.
Either way, improving your running fitness is one of the most effective ways to improve overall conditioning, work capacity, and confidence across a wide range of workouts. By the end of the month, you'll almost certainly find yourself moving more efficiently and feeling more comfortable covering distances that may have felt challenging at the start.
As always, distances and volumes can be adapted where needed, ensuring everyone gets the intended stimulus regardless of experience level.
Constantly Varied Means Exactly That
One of the defining principles of CrossFit is constantly varied functional movement.
Hero Month gives us a fantastic opportunity to embrace that.
Rather than following a dedicated strength cycle or spending several weeks progressing a specific skill, August will be packed with varied, challenging, and memorable workouts. You'll encounter different movement combinations, different workout lengths, and different tests of fitness throughout the month.
This also means that whether you're in the gym every day or away for part of the summer holidays, you'll be able to jump straight back into classes without feeling like you've missed several weeks of a progression or strength cycle.
Every session stands on its own while still contributing to your overall fitness.
Of course, Hero Month doesn't mean we're abandoning the things that make Furnace, Furnace. You'll still see Team WODs, Midweek Mover sessions, partner workouts, and plenty of opportunities to train alongside and support one another. While the workouts may carry the names and stories of heroes, the community experience that defines our gym remains exactly the same.
Fitness Doesn't Stop During Hero Month
Whenever we move away from a dedicated strength cycle, it's natural for some members to wonder whether they'll still be making progress.
The answer is absolutely.
Hero Workouts are often known for their running and conditioning elements, but many also include challenging barbell work, gymnastics, odd-object movements, and tests of strength under fatigue. Throughout August you'll still see plenty of opportunities to lift, pull, push, carry, squat, and challenge yourself in different ways.
As always, the programming will be intentional and balanced. While each session is inspired by a Hero Workout, we'll carefully structure the month to expose you to a broad range of movements, muscle groups, energy systems, and training stimuli. The goal isn't simply to survive a month of hard workouts, it's to continue building well-rounded fitness.
Just as importantly, the same high standard of coaching you expect at Furnace will be there every day. Our coaches will continue to guide movement quality, help you choose appropriate scaling options, manage intensity, and ensure you get the right stimulus from each workout.
Hero Month may look different from a traditional cycle, but you'll still be developing many of the qualities that underpin long-term progress: aerobic capacity, work capacity, pacing, movement efficiency, resilience, and confidence in your ability to tackle unfamiliar challenges.
In other words, fitness is built through a wide variety of experiences. Hero Month gives us the opportunity to embrace that variety while honouring the individuals whose stories these workouts represent.
The Furnace Hero Month Challenge
For those who enjoy a challenge, we've got something special for our Committed Club members.
